Jose Mourinho is ready to fight it out to sign Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng this summer as he tries to fix Manchester United’s defensive issues, according to reports.
The former Real Madrid boss is targeting as many as five new signings and is prioritising defenders, as well as a holding midfielder, having become unhappy with his back-line in recent weeks.
And, according to The Sun, Mourinho is interested in bringing Boateng back to Manchester, with the German potentially available this summer.
Jerome Boateng is also being tracked by Real Madrid, Barcelona and his old Bayern boss Pep Guardiola. Those close to Boateng expect him to seek a new challenge in the summer, with Mourinho primed to make a big play to lure him to Old Trafford, where he would partner Eric Bailly.
key Tottenham clash Boateng established himself as one of the leading centre-backs in the world under Guardiola and has continued to deliver consistently excellent performances this season.
Were he to leave the Allianz Arena, Bayern – who also have Mats Hummels and Niklas Sule to choose from at centre-back – would demand around £50m for Boateng.
Mourinho is known to be in the market for a number of defensive reinforcements, having grown frustrated with the errors made by Phil Jones and Chris Smalling, while he blasted his full-backs in the FA Cup win over Brighton.
He has already claimed publically that he does not want any more attackers, though he does want a new holding midfielder – Shakhtar’s Fred has been linked – to sit alongside Nemanja Matic and free up Paul Pogba.
