Thomas Muller offers tactful remarks on the Chinese Super League

Thomas Muller remained tastefully neutral when he was asked about the Chinese Super League, and its massive financial draw, that’s enticed some top-shelf talent to make the move to China. Speaking to Goal, Muller offered his insight on the path to the CSL that some players choose to take in a day and age he has dubbed as “very crazy.”

It is a difficult position for us players because first, to play football is our profession. So we earn our money with that but also you have to think about the best competitions are in Europe. You have to decide.

He added:

I think the top, top players who have the mindset to win competition every year, every year on a high level, they stay in Europe and maybe when they are over the peak but also on a good level, they can go around the world and see things that can also be interesting.

Muller’s comments come just days after Shanghai SIPG’s technical director, Mads Davidsen, came out and said that he thinks Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery are “too old” to play in the CSL. Despite Davidsen taking a clear pot shot at the midfield duo, Muller maintained a respectable level of diplomacy in his remarks instead of using the opportunity to fire back.
