Real Madrid stand in the way of Bayern and a second treble in the history of the Bavarians.
The Spanish giants have owned the tournament in recent years, becoming the first club in history to win it in its modern format in back-to-back seasons last year.
Los Blancos haven’t been great in La Liga this campaign but there’s just something about Europe that brings out the best in them. When the lights are on, Cristiano Ronaldo and co. can be relied upon to turn up.
Real didn’t make their quarter-final tie against Juventus an easy one. Leading 3-0 from the first leg, they were expected to cruise into the final four.
But the Italians staged a remarkable comeback to level the tie at 3-3 on aggregate before Ronaldo scored a winner from the penalty spot in injury time.
Zinedine Zidane will hope Real’s experience will count for something in the semi-final but he’s going up against a manager in Jupp Heynckes who lead Bayern to Champions League glory in 2013.
And they will be facing a player in James Rodriguez with a point to prove.
RAMOS’ TWEET FROM 2017
James joined Bayern on loan from Real at the start of the season, having failed to cement a regular spot in the starting line-up at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Joining Bayern has given James a new lease of life; he’s scored six goals and provided 11 assists in all competitions for the Bavarians.
James’ reunion with Real has caused many to remember the tweet that Sergio Ramos sent when the move was confirmed.
It’s safe to say the tweet looks pretty spooky now.
“Panita, I wish you the best in your new stage… except when we meet in the Champions League, of course. 😉Good luck, @jamesdrodriguez !,” Ramos wrote.
