Gary Linker’s amazing tweet after Toni Kroos goal

Germany appeared to be heading out of the World Cup at one point on Saturday evening.

The reigning world champions, who lost their opening match 1-0 to Mexico, went 1-0 down midway through the first half after Ola Toivonen lobbed the ball over Manuel Neuer.

Marco Reus equalised for Germany after half-time but Joachim Low’s side knew that one point would still leave them on the brink of a shock World Cup exit.

They never gave up and the winner came in the fifth minute of stoppage-time through Toni Kroos, whose stunning free-kick earned the Germans all three points.

It was a moment of magic from the world-class Real Madrid midfielder, who managed to beat Sweden goalkeeper Robin Olsen from an acute angle.

Germany’s fate is now in their own hands again. Beat South Korea next week and better Sweden’s result against Mexico and they will advance to the knockout stages.

The old adage is true: never write off the Germans.

Fans of England were getting excited throughout the evening about the prospect of Germany being eliminated from the World Cup in the group stages.

But when Kroos scored, former England striker Gary Lineker posted the perfect tweet…

“Football is a simple game, 22 men chase the ball for 82 minutes and the Germans get a player sent off so 21 men chase the ball for 13 minutes and at the end the Germans somehow f***ing win,” the Match of the Day host tweeted.

You’ve nailed it there, Gary. Germany always, always, manage to find a way to win.

Following this result, Germany’s odds of winning the World Cup have shortened to 7/1.

Spain, Brazil and Belgium, however, are still rated by the bookies as more likely winners at this stage of the tournament.
