There was an ugly scene between Arjen Robben and Frank Ribery in the half-time break of the 2012 Champions League semi-final as they had a fight in the locker room.
Playing against Real Madrid, their mid-way brawl was becoming a distraction from the task in hand.
The spat began on the pitch. There was a disagreement over who should take a free kick towards the end of the first half. and ended with Ribery swinging a punch at his Dutch teammate and then their Bayern colleagues dragging the wingers apart.
Both players were hauled before Bayern bosses Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Uli Hoeness the following morning and given a dressing down, with Ribery taking most of the blame and being fined for his actions.
Jupp Heynckes spoke about the fight a few years after.
“Once, Ribery was hot under the collar but I told him to stick to the rules and behave himself,”
“His argument with Robben was unbelievable. They fought with each other because of a simple free kick!
“There was not this kind of scene again the next season because we learned from our mistakes. After this fight, I made it clear who would take free kicks. And each respected my decision.”
