Another day, another set of quotes hammering Arsenal star Mesut Ozil.
Germany, the reigning world champions, are arriving in Russia under several black clouds.
On the pitch Germany only have one win in their last five. And that was a 2-1 win over Saudi Arabia at home on Friday night.
Previously the Germans lost to Brazil and Austria, while drawing to France and Spain.
Germany have also had issues off the pitch involving Man City’s Ilkay Gundogan and Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil.
A few weeks ago both Gundogan and Ozil met with Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
That meeting sparked a backlash with German fans.
While Gundogan has spoken to the likes of France Football about the meeting with Erdogan, Ozil is refusing to talk to the press.
That’s gone down badly in Germany, where it’s been a daily feature of their World Cup build-up to read articles bashing Ozil.
On Wednesday, Sport Bild publish new quotes from Stefan Effenberg attacking the Arsenal and Man City stars:
If you promote certain values, as the DFB repeatedly conveys, then the decision can actually only be that you throw these two players out.
Ozil and Gundogan are lucky that the DFB acted inconsistently and not fast in this case.
To be clear, neither Ozil nor Gundogan appear to be in danger of being benched in the World Cup because of their meeting with the Turkish president.
