UEFA announce major change to next season’s Champions League

UEFA have announced that teams will be allowed an extra substitution if Champions League matches go into extra time next season.

FIFA have brought in the same rule during this summer’s World Cup, allowing sides to bring on another pair of fresh legs in extra time – taking the total of substitutions allowed to four.

The rule will also be in place for the UEFA Europa League, Super Cup, European Championship in 2020 and Women’s competitions.

A statement on UEFA’s website reads:

An additional substitute will be permitted in the following UEFA competitions (a maximum of three substitutions during normal playing time will still apply)

• UEFA Champions League 2018/19

• UEFA Europa League 2018/19

• UEFA Super Cup 2018

• UEFA Women’s Champions League 2018/19

• UEFA European Football Championship 2018–20
