Liverpool legend Phil Thompson believes Jurgen Klopp’s side can make the most of the Spanish giants’ attacking approach.
Liverpool booked their place in the Champions League final on Wednesday night by overcoming Roma 7-6 on aggregate.
And that set up a showdown with Real in Kiev, after Zinedine Zidane’s men had dumped Bayern Munich out of the competition 24 hours earlier.
Fans across the globe are eagerly anticipating the NSC Olimpiyskiy Stadium clash which will pit two of the world’s most attack-minded teams against each other.
Thompson has now explained why Liverpool will have wanted to face Real before the Champions League semi-finals draw was even made.
“Before the semi-finals you think who would you rather have and it was always Real Madrid,” Thompson told Sky Sports.
“The way they attack with abandon suits Liverpool. Real Madrid can only play that way.
“For them to have won it two years in a row and going for a third and the history of Real Madrid in the competition you have to make them favourites.
“But I would rather it was that way because I think they will be in for a big surprise, because this Liverpool team can hurt anybody.
“Madrid are better than what they have been in the semi-finals, but you look over recent matches in the league and they have been very fortunate in a lot of games.
“A few of their players are ageing and Liverpool have more energy in the side around the pitch, particularly in midfield.
“I think that area, rather than the two forward lines, might be the telling point.”
